Feasibility of Using SEER-Medicare Data to Assess the Influence of ESA Policy Changes on Outcomes
The purpose of this study is to utilize the linked SEER-Medicare Database to conduct a population-based assessment of how policies affect the patterns, disparities, and outcomes of care in patients with cancer. The ultimate goal is to assess whether the 2008 CMS NCD and 2010 ESA REMS affected red blood cell transfusion rates, hospitalization rates due to cardiovascular complications, cancer recurrence rates, and mortality. Accordingly, this study is separated into two parts. Part 1 will determine the feasibility of utilizing the linked SEER-Medicare Database for calendar years 2006-2007 to perform this assessment. Part 2, if warranted, will analyze how ESA regulations affect health outcomes using SEER-Medicare data encompassing calendar years 2006-2011.
