Why She Tries

In 2009 I went from the couch to a half marathon in just about four months. I was inspired to try something new and chose to run with the DC Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. A family member just passed away from Leukemia, and I didn't know a whole lot about it. I finished the race and raised money for the group. It felt good and therapeutic every way around when I finished.

Since then, I've run quite a few half marathons, 10ks and 5ks. I got bored and lazy and always wanted another challenge... one that didn't involve 26.2 miles!

Fast forward seven years... I'm here in Portland, Maine, and for the last year I've covered the Maine Cancer Foundation. I've met some fabulous people working hard to reduce cancer in the state. I've done some really fun and really inspirational stories about the groups they support, the people who are going through treatment, and the effort to make a significant impact on cancer. I can tell you it's an awesome organization.

That said, I've decided to take the ultimate leap and not just report on MCF, but to help raise money too through their biggest fundraiser: Tri For a Cure. I'll swim, bike and run through South Portland this July and do my part to fight this disease. It will be the best, most challenging assignment.

We've all been impacted by cancer. Some more than others. I've seen breast, Leukemia, pancreatic, lung... it's no stranger to me, and part of the reason why I report on with so much passion. So, if you've read this far, and want to help me help make a little bit of difference, feel free to make a donation. Trust me, you won't regret it!
